MA Thesis: Colour Visions

Colours in woven textiles exist multidimensionally: each thread contributes to this fascinating matrix, which, in culmination, becomes cloth. Despite the complex paths each coloured thread travels, jacquard woven imagery is often read as two-dimensional, as an image existing on a surface rather than being interlaced in a complex volumetric system.

This research seeks to explore the compositional methodology of digital jacquard weaving, contributing to the aesthetic expressions and techniques made available for artists and designers when highlighting the structural and material characteristics of woven cloth.

Drawing inspiration from the theories of impressionist painting, the developed design methodology has been executed with the aim of evoking an ambient mood in viewers through the interaction of colour and weave structure, allowing the viewer’s eye to blend the elements together and form their own interpretation of the image. This approach challenges traditional expectations of clarity in woven imagery and emphasizes the expressive impacts and potentials of materiality.
